search your home when making design commitments…

I’m in the process of making a bit of a design commitment. I need to select fabric which will not be permanent but will be long term. It will be in a highly visible spot so I want to be happy with my decision. I definitely want a pattern instead of a solid so I decided to look around me to help make this decision. This is the best way to discover your style. Which patterns do you lean towards? Colors could or could not apply to this theory. I toured my home and found that I love repetitive patterns. Stripes, geometrics, anything with a repeat. See for yourself… These are a mix of the rugs, furniture, walls, pillow, window treatments and even floors in my home. Don’t forget the laundry hamper. They are all repetitive and symmetrical patterns from stripes to chevrons and everything in between. Although patterns such…

my television entertainment unit is a goner…

Over 12 years ago I bought a huge entertainment unit that housed our television with plenty of storage through both drawers and a side cabinet. At the time it was fantastic. Our previous home was larger than the one we are in now. It fit perfectly in a corner of our living room and I didn’t give it a second thought.  I haven’t been too happy with the size of this piece in our current home though. It limits what I can do in the living room. The television is forced to be along that particular wall since there is no other wall large enough to hold that piece. This forces us to put the sofa in the bay window area. Instead of enjoying the huge window we have we are forced to look at the television unit when sitting on the sofa. It sticks out from the wall by…

Organize your paperwork with DIY clipboards…

Life is full of paperwork. I needed a better system to keep track of my three children’s homework, latest achievement, birthday invitations and more. All of this paperwork is kept in my kitchen but was becoming lost. I wanted something visible, separated by child and nice to look at. I came across some clipboards and purchased three for $3.65 each, one for each child. They were extremely sturdy and I knew that once I added a few personal touches they would be up to the job. I painted the edges with red craft paint since I wasn’t a fan of the cardboard brown look. Once the paint was dry I cut some faux bois wrapper paper to modge podge onto the front. The thicker the wrapping paper the better. I was able to find this roll for only $2.99. Plenty left over for some fun holiday wrapping! I outlined the…

because it is pretty {a paneled wall}

I saw this image a couple months ago and love the staggered panelling. Just like the board and batten the I faked in my basement this could be an easy look to replicate. This is going to be another one of those designs that I can’t get out of my head until I do it myself. Now to just find the right wall… via pure style home

updating the master bedroom…

In my continued  effort to force spring to get here as fast as possible I set my sights on my master bedroom. I shared some photos a couple weeks ago and realized it needed some color and light. Everything was a bit neutral and heavy. The lamps weren’t the right scale and the floor needed some warming up. I lightened and brightened it all up with some bedding, lighting and rug rearranging… I’ll address the lights first. There is no overhead lighting in this room. We wanted to add one when we first moved in but the air condition grate is right in the middle of the room. I would have centered a light fixture so this option was out. We had two lights on our night side tables and they were not the right scale. Much too small which meant a lower wattage bulb. Not to mention that with…

the wrapping station closet…

Whenever I wrap a gift I have a little scavenger hunt to do first. I have all the supplies I need I just have to find them. The wrapping paper is in a Rubbermaid wrapping paper storage container which I’ve had for about 16 years. I lost the top in one of our moves. This container sits in a closet in the basement and holds all the wrapping paper rolls and gift bags. The ribbon is found there as well. Gift cards are in a cabinet in the kitchen. The tape is a whole different story. My children are tape hoarders so I’m lucky if I find tape at all. I hide it, they find it.  Whenever I’m Christmas shopping I never know what I have so I go ahead and buy paper and gift tags only to come home and eventually find out that I still have paper and…

Farewell Expedit and a brief personal history…

IKEA made an announcement a couple days ago stating that it would be discontinuing the Expedit and replacing it with the Kallax. The decision shocked many and made four pieces of furniture in my house cry. Yes, I own four Expedits. At one time I even owned five. I can explain. via IKEA First of all let me apologize and warn you that some of the pictures you are about to see are from before I was a blogger. The shots are not staged in the least bit. The furniture is in the background and the chubby baby faces are in the foreground. One of my rooms even had red walls. Prepare yourselves. I first bought an IKEA Expedit about 8 years ago for our previous homes’ office, back when we had a home office. It was the 5 x 5 version in white and held all of our office…

the front entryway…

All the finishing touches have been completed on the entryway and here she is… Yes, my entryway is a girl and very pretty. Clean lines, storage in the right places and color! Here is what she looked like from the very beginning.  The changes haven’t been huge but they have taken a bit of time. It is amazing what a paintbrush and some paint can accomplish!

artwork in the mudroom…

When I was figuring out how to decorate the striped wall in my mudroom I decided pretty early on that I wanted it to be personal and quirky. I didn’t want to go out and buy just anything to fill up the space. This felt like a room that could be a little fun. I started collecting a mix of things we had, some from trips, some from family and some things we created. In other words I also decided to put my children to work.  The main striped wall has the most going on. We had recently started having fun with watercolors to pass the time on all the snow days we’ve had this winter. The mudroom art on the left is something I made by drawing some clothing and accessories I found images of in Google searches. I then painted  them in using watercolors.  This next one is…
