DIY table tutorial

When I was looking around for furniture for my porch I gave myself the challenge of only using yard sale or Craiglist finds. I found everything I needed except for a small table in front of the sofa. I had an image of the table I wanted in my head and I hit the jackpot on a trip to Target. Yes the top is white and yes the base is hot pink but with some spray paint and some additions on the top I could have a whole new table. Add to that the fact that it cost $19.99. I swung by Home Depot hoping to find something I could put on top. It had to be round and wooden. I didn’t have any luck in the lumber section or the kitchen section. I was hoping to find a lazy suzan insert for cabinets to serve as the table top. Nothing…

eye candy {wallpaper}

School has begun which means I’m getting my house back. Most rooms look like a toy store threw up in it so I’m slowly getting things back to normal. My normal. In the meantime I’m sharing my latest bit of eye candy. I’ve never wallpapered before and I’ve become a bit obsessed with the look lately. If I do use wallpaper I think my laundry room might be my next victim.  I plan on only doing the wall behind the sink, washer and dryer. The rest of the room is painted with  Behr Breaker, a very soft and subtle blue. One Kings Lane has a great sale on wallpaper going on right now. Here are some samples I’m loving…

So I built a table…

As the finishing details were being completed on my porch I began looking for some sort of coffee table. First I thought I’d find some small table at yard sales, paint them the same color and call it a day. That didn’t happen. Then I thought I’d create a table using some black wire trash cans I found. That didn’t pan out either. It does make a lovely magazine holder though.  So I was a bit stuck as to what to do for a coffee table. I knew I wanted it to look something like this… via hayneedle or this… via worldmarket Basically I had another image stuck in my head. Elaborate black metal base with a wooden stained top. Great. So much for trying to spend as little as possible on this porch! That is until the the other day when I went to Target and spotted this… Cue…

maps as wall art

I’ve had many questions from readers, friends and family about the wall art I’ve used in my laundry room. The laundry room is still a work in progress but one thing I do like about it is the huge world map I’ve added to bring some color and visual interest to the room.  It is a National Geographic map that I purchased through Zulily. I just saw today that they are having another sale on National Geographic maps and thought I’d let you know! Click on the link to join Zulily and get some map art for yourself!

The three season porch is done!

My three season porch was originally my spring project. It then turned into my summer project. Since I just checked my calendar and summer ends in this house in three weeks I decided to show you the final results before summer if officially over.  If you remember back, this is what I started with… Since I love before and after shots I’ll share some… It feels like we’ve added another room onto our house. The kids sit out there to read and chat. My husband and I have breakfast there every morning. I’ve made a lot of changes to make it work throughout the day. Lots of tutorials to come… These last two shots are my favorite. Billowing curtains in action! linking up at: Thrifty Decor Chick

hanging curtains with tension wire…

Curtains and curtain rods can be expensive. My porch is basically all windows so I knew I needed to be creative and practical when it came to hanging up some curtains. I wanted the look of one continuous wall of curtains times three. Ikea has the Dignitet system but I had no IKEA trips planned in my future. I headed over to Home Depot and was able to create my own system using wire, screw hooks, clamps sets and turnbuckles. The tension rod system cost me $43 for the whole room, besides the 7 sheers I bought to finish the look. First I decided on where I wanted to place my curtains. I wanted them wall to wall and meeting in the corner. I began by measuring the length of my sheers and then placing my screw hooks in the wall. I then cut my wire rope and created a…

curtain inspiration for the porch

Now that the floor on my porch is completed and the paintbrushes have been put away I’m moving on to my windows. The porch has old jalousied windows with screens. They let in the breeze but are hideous to look at. They never look clean no matter how hard I scrub. I won’t be replacing them anytime soon so I began looking for ideas for covering them. I knew I wanted sheers since I still want to be able to see my yard and more importantly my children playing in the yard!  I found some images of what was in my head. White sheers that billow in the breeze. The open feel with a little bit of privacy that only sheers can achieve. via bhg via shorpy On a recent trip to Target I found my sheers. White, sheer with a subtle stripe to play off the larger stripe in…

Painting stripes on wood floors…

The plans for my porch all began with one idea in mind. Before I knew what colors I would use or what fabric I wanted for my pillows or even what furniture those pillows would be sitting on I knew one thing. The floor would be striped.  This is a high traffic area. We are constantly coming in and out from the back yard onto the porch, which is off the kitchen. Between three kids and a dog I want this floor to be able to take a beating. I had not touched the porch since moving in three years ago and the wooden plank floors were a collage of red, brown and green paint.  I did a lot of research and decided on my primer and paint. First I would use Benjamin Moore Fresh Start Primer followed by Benjamin Moore Floor and Patio paint in Decorator’s White. This paint is…
