inspiration for my striped porch floors…

I’m not kidding when I say that I’m designing my entire porch around the floors. I saw this image a while back and I was smitten… source I decided on the gray and white floor with a blue ceiling color scheme pretty early on.  Now that the painting is almost done I can start thinking about the colors to add to the rest of the room. Actually, I’m lying. I already know what colors I’m adding to the rest of the room. You’ll just have to wait and see.

paint the walls, check…

So my porch project is in full “get it done” mode. I stalled a bit when it came to the painting but now I’m ready to finish and actually begin enjoying this room! I’ve basically been painting in bits and pieces for three days straight and it is paying off.   The furniture was moved to the center of the room and then covered in a plastic sheet. The walls were then painted with two coats of Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s White.  The brightness of the white walls against the blue ceiling is my favorite part of this room, and it’s not even done yet. All that is left is the floor. Did I mention I’m painting that too?

my to do list…

So after some vacation time with the family I’m back and ready to get some paint on my fingernails again. Here is the list I came up with I what I’d like to accomplish in the general future. It’s a long one… Strangely enough this list does not have me cringing in fear. Rather, try to picture me rubbing my hands together with a maniacal laugh. Buckle up!

My first article for Houzz…

Yes, you read that right. Let me explain… A couple weeks ago I was interviewed by Houzz for a feature on my basement remodel. Houzz is the internet’s largest database of design and decorating ideas. It is full of inspirational images, idea books and resources. If you are working on your home and want to get ideas based on rooms, styles or features Houzz is the place to find all that. Houzz also is full of articles or idea books with information on how to make your home look incredible. I was ecstatic beyond belief that Houzz would be featuring my basement. Then that night I got an email from Becky Harris, the writer for Houzz who interviewed me. She was wondering if I would be interested in writing for them. I would love to tell you the words that next came out of my mouth but my mother is reading this. Suffice…

one coat down, two to go…

The porch project is taking me longer than I thought. I’m kicking myself for not getting the painting done before the kids got out of school. So I’ve now had to pace the painting out a bit. I finally got the chance to get one coat of primer down and it’s really changed the look of the porch already. The best word to describe it now is airy. The old yellow color was dark, but now that I see white everywhere it looks very fresh and light.  I primed all four walls, the door frames, as well as the threshold into the kitchen. It was painted a muddy green color but will be given a new coat of black. The floors will be painted as well so I’ll be priming those at some point. For now I primed the edges so that all I have to do is use the…

finding the perfect summer blanket…

My boy’s have matching red duvets as their bedding. The 100% cotton canvas is great in the winter. Just the right combination of heavy, warm and cozy. During the summer I’m constantly pulling them off my sleeping and sweaty boys. I usually end up removing the comforter from the duvet cover but this summer I got something different stuck in my head. I wanted to find some lightweight summer blankets. Striped lightweight summer blankets. Blue and white stripped lightweight summer blankets to be exact. If you know me well enough by now you know that once I get something in my head I can’t get it out. I searched and did find some perfect blankets. The problem was that most prices were not so perfect.  Then the other day an ad came on for Target. I actually paused the tv because I had just caught a glimpse of the perfect…

4 chairs and no sofa…

My family room has one sofa that is about 15 years old. Sixteen in August to be exact. It was the first piece of furniture my husband and I purchased when we got married. It was green leather, had the option of being a pull-out sofa for guests and at the time, it was awesome. We used it as a living room sofa until we moved into out current home 3 years ago.  Fifteen years later and the green leather is not so awesome. It is now covered with a neutral slip cover. The sofa bed has not been pulled out or slept on in about 8 years. It is heavy, clunky and not very versatile.  Versatility is important in my family room. Most of the time the floor space is in active use, meaning someone is having a dance off party, making a fort, playing a game, wrestling with…
