house tour {the foyer}

I’ve always shared my current projects in various rooms of my home through posts, but I’ve never actually showed you my home from top to bottom. Today I’m going to begin a house tour. Every Friday I’ll be sharing another room. Most are finished, for now at least. A space is complete only until I get my next idea!  Throughout the tours I’ll share some of the minor cosmetic changes we made when we first moved in three years ago. We only did one major job when we first bought the home. We changed the furnace and zoning for the heat from one entire zone to 4 zones, one for each floor. Sounds huge, right? I’ll explain why we have four floors. Zoning has saved us a bundle by not heating the whole space all at once.  Let me begin by describing the type of home I have. It was…

keeping track of library books…

With a busy house of five, keeping track of our own items can be a challenge. Then add to that all the items that come from other people or places and you have a whole new problem. Case in point, library books. We go to the library, picks out books or DVD’s or CD’s and then bring them home. We had a library bag which I would hang in the front hall closet. Out of sight, out of mind is a big theme in my home. We would forget we had the books to read because they were in the closet. They would sit there until they were due back at the library. If the books actually made it out of the bag there is a good chance they would be lost, for quite a while. It took me about two months to find “The Happy Penguin” and I wasn’t…

lining a bookcase with wrapping paper

One of the projects I tackled to customize the bookcase in my daughter’s room was lining the back of her bookcase with wrapping paper. I’ve been looking for quite a long time for that perfect paper to line the back of the bookcase with. I was willing to use craft paper, wrapping paper, wall paper, or whatever I found.  A couple of weeks ago I was in Marshall’s and came across exactly what I was looking for in the wrapping paper selection. I had a couple of nieces with me and they knew even from 30 feet away that I had hit the jackpot. The large gray and white striped wrapping paper fits in perfectly with the color scheme I have going on for the rest of the room (don’t forget the blue walls). The other reasons it was perfect are important to remember if you plan on doing this…

the cloffice reveal

The cloffice is officially finished! I first started off with a closet with sliding doors. I painted it using chalkboard paint and then added some storage. I then built a floating desk and added some wall mounted lighting. After adding some office accessories from The Container Store and Home Goods it was done. Let me show you how far it has come…  The storage area to the side is starting to fill up and has stayed nice and organized. Some craft storage was added to the shelves using kitchen storage containers. It is easy to see inside and makes a great display. The top display shelf has some animals at the moment. It’s a great shelf for a collection! There is plenty of room under the desk for a number of things. Our dog’s bed fits perfectly under there. On some days it has been an art gallery, other days…

how to hide the cords from a wall mounted light fixture

The cloffice in my daughter’s room has two wall mounted fixtures which I purchased from IKEA. The are classic and elegant without being too “girly”. The head is adjustable and it is the perfect amount of light for the small space. IKEA Arstid I didn’t want to spend any money on electricians to install fixtures so I decided wall mounted would do. The only problem is the tell tale cord running down to wall.   I’ve used wall mounted fixtures in my boys room as well. The only difference was that the Pottery Barn Fisherman lantern  in their room came with an extension to hide the cord. Plus it is a boys room so I didn’t mind the industrial aspect this added.  Since these lamps in my daughters room are on top of the chalkboard wall I needed a way to make them disappear. Enter Cordhider.  I purchased one Cordhider with an…

the cloffice desk

The cloffice is officially done! The pretty factor has not been added yet (accessories and more) but that is another day. Today I will take you through the steps of installing a floating desktop. When I last shared the cloffice this is what it looked like… The walls were painted, the storage was in and the lighting was up. All I needed was a desk. I went to Home Depot with my exact measurements for both the desktop and the cleats which would hold the desktop up. I purchased Poplar plywood which the nice gentlemen at Home Depot cut for me.  Before I did any work on the plywood I made sure it fit in the desktop. Luckily it was a perfect fit. I sanded the edges, painted one coat of primer and then two coats of Benjamin Moore semi-gloss white paint. I primed the entire piece of wood but…
