As I was going through my West Elm catalog the other day I came across this image… via west elm Do you see the birch logs in the fireplace? I love how the ends are painted. This got me googling and pinning and searching since I have some birch logs of my own… via house and home via house and home via artatheart via the red chair vid k.i.d. collective I’m not sure I’d have the guts to paint the entire log. I’m not even sure I’d be brave enough to add a color to the ends. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t stain the ends or apply some sort of finish. Baby steps.
Read MoreThe following is a guest post from Goldenageusa.com, with some great ideas on kitchen lighting solutions. For a space that sees so much action every day, the kitchen is usually at the head of the line when it comes to home design. True, kitchen design is an important aspect of a beautiful home, taking into consideration the fact that it is one of the few places that brings the family together several times a day. However, kitchen lighting in many homes still takes the conventional and functional route of “one size fits all”. Functionality is important, but we need to expand the definition somewhat to cover all the different zones that make up the modern, upscale and stylish kitchens of today. While we have definitely moved on from the single large fixture that once lit up the kitchen, shadows, dark corners and all, kitchen lighting design for the most part, is…

Read MoreI was able to do one of my favorite things this weekend. I went with my daughter and my two nieces for some antiquing. We were in Rhinebeck, NY, which is full of antique shops and found ourselves at the Beekman Arms Antique Market, a two story red barn complete with a rickety staircase and a barn door. We didn’t purchase a thing had a lot of fun looking at all the items. Here are a few that were worth of some pictures. I have a thing for birds. These little guys were only a couple dollars each. I’m regretting that I walked away from them now. How cute would this be in a laundry or craft room. Each spool of wool thread was on a wooden spindle. It was quite a colorful collection. This shot does not do it justice at all. These heavy iron brackets would be a…
Read MoreI am constantly sketching. I have floor plans, furniture arrangement plans, future room projects, old projects, fonts, logo’s, etc. The list goes on and on. I’ve never actually gone out and bought myself a sketchbook to keep it all together which would probably be the more organized thing to do. I blame Pinterest. Well the other day this all changed. I received an blank journal from Rag & Bone and immediately sat down and started filling up some pages. It is a blank handmade journal. That’s right, I said handmade! The Artist Journals have hand-cut deckled edged pages of soft yet thick vellum. That sentence alone is a graphic designer’s dream. The pages are thick enough for pen, pencil, ink or a soft watercolor. I’ve decided to name it my idea book. How great to have a year’s worth of ideas in one place. I might not complete them all but I think…

Read MoreThe other day I made some big impact changes in my living room by simply switching the location of two pieces of furniture. The easy adjustment created a comfortable and inviting spot which is the first thing you see when walking in my front door. I still had some more changes in mind for that corner. The pieces on the wall are two wooden wall plaques that I bought years ago. They seemed too dark for that space now so I relocated some frames from my upstairs hallway and added them to the corner. I also put the small table on the other side of the chair to break up two pieces of furniture being next to each other. The white frames with family photos lighten up the space and add a very cozy feel to this section of the living room. I plan on building this wall up…
Read MoreI’m a big fan of rearranging. I do it a lot. Maybe too much. Change is good and sometimes some simple changes can transform a room. Nothing new needs to be purchased. Simply look around your home and use what you already have. I used this approach yesterday on my living room. I’ve been wanting to change is around for a while now but didn’t have too many options. You’ve already seen this area of the living room… …and this area… …and this one as well. But I haven’t show you this side and with good reason. The two pieces of furniture you see are the tv armoire, which I want gone yesterday, and “the desk.” The desk is for all the bills, mail, etc. It is a lot of wood in one corner and just too busy for me. It is also what you see when you first walk…
Read MoreMy home is full of beautiful windows. They are all paneled which creates a sort of dilemma for me. Cleaning them is like an Olympic sport. Well, not really but you get the idea. By the time I spray the window cleaner on and picked up the paper towel to wipe it the spray has pooled to the bottom of the panel. It becomes a rush job with spray in one hand and the paper towel in the other. Since I am not ambidextrous the job comes out less than perfect. I then received an offer from Fish Foam and asked to try out their product. They sent me three sample bottles and my windows have never been happier! It is actually foam as the name implies which means there is no running and no pooling. Did I mention it is alcohol based which also means no streaking? I’ve now used it…
