One of the last items needed in the new cloffice is the desktop. It was decided upon a while ago that we would be making a floating desk. The board I created on Pinterest had a big part in this decision since my daughter was able to visualize what the heck we were actually making anyways. The next step was figuring out what material to make the desk out of. I needed a surface 63 inches wide and 19.25 inches deep. With a list of measurements in hand I was off to Home Depot. I checked out the shelving section first hoping that there would be some melamine pieces that I could work with. No luck there since the shelves were all just under 12 inches deep. There were larger piece of melamine but I would have to finish the edges. The melamine was also very thin. I had done…
Read More{black windows} Lately I’ve been drawn to black windows, especially when paired with white moldings, either exterior or interior. I’m not sure what it is about this design choice that draws me in. The contrast just seems to make an ordinary window have such a presence. I’ve noticed it on houses in my area as I drive around. Living in Boston there are plenty of chances to see an example of this look since it is on so many Colonial homes. It is not something I’ll be doing on my own home anytime soon so I thought I’d get it out of my system for now by sharing a couple images. {via Houzz} {via Annabel Vita} {via Houzz} {via An Urban Cottage} {via Houzz} {via Pinterest} {via Pinterest} {via Houzz} {via Mackle Construction Company} {via Houzz} {via Houzz} {via Houzz} {via MacCaul Turner Design} {via Red Element Design}
Read MoreIn between the larger projects going on in my daughter’s bedroom I decided to address the window situation. The walls looked so nice but the stark windows, not so nice. The window has a light blocking roller shade for privacy that will be staying in place. Since the molding and shade are both white it practically disappears when rolled up. We’ve decided on the color scheme for the rest of the room and I’m on the hunt for fabrics and accessories! I wanted simple window panels so that the fabrics used throughout the room on the bed, pillows and chair (all to come) would be the showcase. White sheers with the texture of cheesecloth and an embroidery stitch throughout are the perfect blend of softness and simplicity. My biggest…

Read MoreAfter the new cloffice in my daughters room was painted with chalkboard paint it needed some shelving and accessories to make it a functioning “office”. I wanted to keep it simple so I purchased two floating shelves, an IKEA Fintorp wall storage system which has been a bit hit in the kitchen, and an IKEA Billy bookcase. All of these pieces put together will add plenty of storage for any age. First up is the Billy bookcase. The dimensions are so perfect that it fits very snuggly in the left corner of the closet facing the opposite side wall. The desktop I’ll be adding will be a floating one so there won’t be any sides obstructing access to all the shelves. For now they can hold items like a basket with hair accessories and toys. As my daughter gets older it will be a great storage system for books, homework…
Read MoreI’ve been eyeing different walls in my home trying to decide which one would be coated with chalkboard paint. I’m pretty obsessed with chalkboards at the moment, as well as the type that is often artistically displayed there. {u-createcrafts.com} When I gutted my daughter’s closet to create her cloffice I found my perfect wall. Or rather, three walls and a ceiling. My daughter is the creative type. She loves writing and drawing. Giving her an area of her room where she could write and draw to her hearts content is the perfect outlet for her. Friends and family have signed the wall and left her little notes as well as drawings. She had a countdown on there for a family trip, she’s left me notes and she has practiced writing her name. A lot. The reaction from everyone has been, “That is so cool!” She loves that part! It has been a…
Read MoreWork continues on my daughters bedroom and there has been some big changes to share. Painting the bedroom was not the biggest project I tackled in this room. I decided to gut her closet in order to create a desk area for her. From here on out it shall be referred to as the cloffice. People have mixed feelings about getting rid of closet space so let me address that first. I’m not worried about resale since I don’t plan on going anywhere. I’ll put that one out there first. If you are planning on moving at all in the future this is still an option for you, just set the doors aside somewhere. You might not want to do the extensive job that I did if that is your plan. Then there is the question of where my daughter will hang all her clothes. She is not a girl…
Read MoreI have a long stretch of counter in my kitchen that on a typical day looks like this… Actually that is not a typical day. On a typical day there are a pile of dishes on the dish towel. A tool or lunchbox or box of cereal is also on the counter. Not to mention the random matchbox car. After seeing the Fintorp series on a recent trip to IKEA I knew it would a great solution to my cluttered counter. I loved the look of everything up off the counter. One thing I’ve realized about myself is that I work better keeping a neat and orderly house when I set boundaries. This system of a railing which holds baskets for various kitchen items is a perfect example. Each basket contains things such as sugar, coffee, oil for cooking, salt pepper, etc. If an item does not fit in the…
Read MoreA year ago today I started a blog. I had no idea what I was doing, I just knew I wanted to write a home design blog. It’s a year later and I’ve learned more than I ever thought I would. Along the way I’ve found a whole new network of friends and readers. Thank you to all who read and support No. 29 Design. A special thank you to my husband and children (known here at home as my design assistant and my clean up crewmen) for making this possible and helping along the way! To add to the celebration, I took part in a Hometalk Hangout on Google + yesterday. Check out some ways to keep your home warm both literally and figuratively.
