I know summer is over and the leaves are turning but I’m just not ready for a fall mantle yet. Let’s talk about the beach… A client of mine is redoing her family room and wants a beachy feel. Nothing over the top, no sand and seashells with oars and buoys. She would like subtle year-round beach inspired style. What is the difference? One little word, inspired. Think of the elements of the beach, the blue water, the neutral sand, wood, sea grass, etc. Use those as texture and color to accessorize your room. Neutral furniture with accents of blues, stripes or whatever color inspires you. What color do you associate with the ocean? Turquoise, coral, red, etc… Rattan furniture, natural fiber rugs such as jute, a wooden log side table, they all bring the element of nature into the room. Lantern can be used as light fixtures, wooden paneling…

Read MoreTarget will be launching a new home decor line this month called Threshold. Threshold will be replacing the Target Home brand with a whole new approach and style. The new line will encompass home furnishings, bedding, bath, rugs, table linens and kitchen textiles The collection is full of texture and color and has a very English countryside feel, mixed in with some on-trend designs. The fall assortment is fresh and classic at the same time. As a graphic designer, they had me at the logo. How do I know all this? Last week I received an email from Target asking for my home address in order to send me a package of Target’s home fall assortment. Ummm, ok! I waited one excruciating week to see what they would be sending me. Finally the day came. A large box arrived and here is what I found… Herringbone frames Fox Oblong Toss…
Read MoreThe top of my refrigerator is one of those places that accumulates junk. The seldom-used cabinet on top is very far back so there is plenty of room for things to gather dust. Play dough, extra plates, random Lego pieces. You name it and it has found a home there. One of my methods for keeping a surface clean and free of this clutter is by filling it up and leaving no room for the extras. Over the weekend I decided to apply this method to my fridge. Everything came down and was put in its place. After I had a blank canvas to work with I shopped around my house for something to put there and found this. I had bought the wooden structure a couple of weeks ago and the plants (plastic of course) were an IKEA find. I might add a couple of accents as time goes by but so far…
Read MoreThe latest installment of eye candy is geared toward the extras. Chotchkies, doodads, accessories. Whatever they are called in your home, they still mean the same thing. I prefer to use items that have meaning, architectural structure, or both. Every once in a while I’ll get something because it is just pretty. Here’s a few items on my newest Pinerest board… These baskets would be perfect for a laundry room, but how about a nursery for those little extras. This could be a laundry bin in a childs’ room or a towel holder in a bathroom. The smaller one could even be a plant stand for a porch or sun room. 2 Metal Laundry Baskets with wheels – $159.00 I love me a good ampersand. It can’t get any better than a red one with lights! Metal “&” Sign w/ Lights – $45.00 I love the color scheme on these four tins.…
Read MoreMy work has begun on the outside of the house. School started today for my two oldest children, which means I can get a little busier! I have so many projects started in bits and pieces. Any time I had a spare second over the summer I would begin something. The next time I would start something else. My guest room downstairs is filled with these projects. One project I was able to finish was the changes I made to the exterior of my home. First up, the front door. This is what I started with. The door itself was burgundy with brass hardware. I began by spray painting the hardware directly on the door. Removing the hardware was a huge hassle so I decided to spray paint first, then paint the door itself. I used Rust-Oleum Universal Metallic spray in Oil-Rubbed Bronze . Two coats with about one hour drying…
Read MoreYesterday my husband came home with some flowers. They were gorgeous. I started taking some pictures because the colors are incredible. The photographs don’t do them justice. Inspiration can come from anywhere, nature being one of my favorite sources. I’d love a rug with these colors in it. This color palette could work in a family room, nursery, little girl’s room, tween girl’s room, even a bathroom. Where would you put it?
Read MoreMy home was built in the 1950’s. The style is definitely traditional, minus one area. The sidelights surrounding my front door are traditional but the glass panels are not. The glass in these panels are ribbed and don’t match the style of the rest of the house. We made so many changes to the front hall when we first moved in. Replacing the front door was not one of them. The sidelights stuck out like a sore thumb. After a couple weeks of cringing every time I walked through the front hall, I came up with a solution. The ribbed glass is hidden, the front hall feels more inviting and it only took about 15 minutes. I purchased two sash rods that were each a little wider than the sidelights. I placed them above the top of the sidelight panel and installed a sheer curtain. The curtain blocks the ribbed…
Read MoreSo my rug shopping is not complete. I have two, possibly three other spaces that could use a rug. My mudroom is bare and will need something but I’m still in the middle of putting this room together. The new guest room has bare floors as well. I want bright colors, warm and cheery. Nothing floral, I’m looking for something out of my comfort zone. The laundry room could use a little punch of color as well. Then again, black and white would look really great in there as well. This is one of the few times that I’m looking around with nothing in mind. I’m just waiting for the rug to hit me. Here are some that have caught my eye so far… Do you see my problem? Keep in mind that these are rugs for three different rooms. All the rugs are at great prices and the quality…
