lisa leonard designs giveaway

I’m so excited to announce that our newest sponsor, Lisa Leonard Designs is offering a giveaway! Her pieces are gorgeous. I just received my personalized Vintage Frames Necklace and I’m in love. Here is a little about Lisa Leonard Designs in her own words… i have been making jewelry since high school but i decided to get serious after my first son, david, was born. i wanted to start a small business that would enable me to quit my job and stay home with my boys. at the time, i had never taken any formal classes or received special training in jewelry making. i just went for it! i am kind of the “jump in and learn as you go” type. creating jewelry not only allowed me to work from home, but has connected me with so many amazing women along the way. my desire is to create simple, lovely pieces…

{recycled} flower pot

The other morning I emptied a container of coffee, washed it and set it aside, just in case. Yes, I do that often. It sat on my counter for about a week as I tried to figure out what to do with it. Crayon container, pencil container, storage in my car? So many options. As I was walking out of the grocery store the other day I passed by the sweetest little flower pot, the perfect size for my coffee container! Within thirty minutes of coming home I had a completed flower container. Here is what you need… {supplies} metal container (from canned veggies, coffee, basically anything in your pantry) paper or fabric Mod Podge First prepare the can. Lay the can on its side and measure out the paper. Make sure it wraps around the entire can with about 1/2 inch at the top and bottom of the can.…

look what came today!

I got a lovely package in the mail today… I have a project planned for a wall downstairs in my new hallway and it includes a stencil. That’s right, I’ll be stenciling! I got this stencil from my sponsor, Royal Design Studios, and I’m itching to get working. While I patiently wait for this whole basement project to finish up I’ll just stare at my stencil. As soon as my wall is painted and ready for viewing, I’ll be sharing a tutorial on how it was all done. For now I’m doing a lot of research on stenciling and I’m waiting…

the built-ins {part one}

When designing the family room section of the basement I knew I wanted a wall of bookcases, storage and media storage. We decided that at some point we were going to bite the bullet and purchase a wall mounted television so I made space for that as well. I wanted built-ins, I just didn’t want the built in price. I went to the IKEA site to see what I could find. I knew I wanted wood pieces that could be customized. The Hemnes line at IKEA is just that. This series is made of pine and painted either white, black or a lovely shade of greige (yes, that is a word). I knew that I was going to have about 17 feet of wall space to work with so I picked the pieces I wanted and added up the dimensions. This took a little bit of figuring out. I went…

corkboard tutorial

My nine year old daughter is a collector. She’s been asking for a cork board for a while and since the alternative is her taping things to her wall I finally got around to it. All I needed were some easy to find supplies. {supplies} cork board fabric staple gun (glue gun or even duct tape would work as well) push pins (I prefer upholstery tacks) First I placed the fabric upside down and laid the cork board on top. I actually found a large cork board with a wood frame. If you don’t find the size you want you could just duct tape pieces of cork together. I cut the fabric with enough room to wrap it around the back of the cork board and staple. I stapled the long sides first, then folded the corners tightly and started working on the last two sides.  The last step is…

playroom moodboard

The basement family room will have a small nook which will be a playroom section. It needs to work with the rest of the room. Even though it is a playroom I don’t want it to scream “this is where the toys are!” I’d like to make some floor cushions which can be pulled into the family room section for extra seating, lounging, or movie night. There is a closet which will contain all the toys, hopefully neatly separated into plastic bins. We’ll see how long that lasts! I’d love to put a flokati rug in there. Nice nod to my heritage, and they sure are cozy. I love the ideas of putting simple curtain panels like in the image on the right,  to separate the space. Other than a simple table to build the latest Lego tower on, there will be no furniture. I don’t want to crowd the…

my scientific method for picking paint color

The time has come to pick paint colors for the basement family room as well as the laundry room. It should come as no surprise that I’m going with a neutral in the family room. Since the walls are mostly covered by the board and batten there will be just a small section of the wall that needs paint on top. I actually have paint left over from when I painted the entire house when we moved in. I’ll be using one of my favorite colors,  Benjamin Moore’s Brandy Creme. The color will run up into the hallway upstairs where I have a special project planned. More on that later! The laundry room has no windows so I am going with something light and airy, Behr’s Breaker. Benjamin Moore Brandy Creme Behr Breaker I took a couple different paints to come to this decision so I thought I’d share how I…
