Now that I have a blank white wall in my kitchen I need to figure out what to put there. I wrote down a couple options so I could get an idea of what we could use in that space. I included what I would love to add to that space, what I needed for our busy family, and what I’d want to keep it functional and pleasing to look at all at the same time. Most of my ideas pointed me to a family command center… I’m hoping to incorporate a little bit of everything on my list all in one space. Wish me luck!
Read MoreWhen I painted my kitchen white I left one wall unpainted, on purpose of course. I’m slowly transitioning my kitchen from a traditional look to a rustic industrial space. I’m doing this by making mostly cosmetic changes as well as removing some cabinets to open the space up. The unpainted wall is the frosting on my cupcake. One of the elements of rustic industrial design that I love is the use of wood planks. With the help of Stikwood this is an easy look to achieve in any space. Stikwood is a peel and stick wood planking option. Instead of the hours cutting up planks of wood and nailing them to the wall you can achieve the same look with a level, measuring tape and an exacto blade. It is a gorgeous and easy way to accent a wall, a door, some furniture, a kitchen island, or anywhere else you can imagine…
Read MoreI love all sorts of furniture but you can tell my fondness for chairs as soon as you step into my front door. On my console shelf in my entryway is my collection… It started with these four silver plated chairs. I bought them years ago at Pottery Barn. I think they were the first item I ever purchased there. They are actually meant to be place card holders. There is a small slot on the back of each chair for the card to fit in. I’ve never used them for that. I just keep them out because I love how they look. They are silver plaited and detailed and tiny. Sometimes I find them in strange configurations with lego characters on them. My next chair items is my own creation. I printed out an image of a chair, cut it out with an exacto knife and then glued it onto…
Read MoreOnce I had removed the cabinets in my kitchen I realized I wanted even more of a change. The space now felt bigger but I also wanted it to feel brighter, as in whiter. Check out my Pinterest board of Rustic Industrial designs if you’d like to see some examples of where I’m headed with this cosmetic kitchen renovation. So once again it was time to look at some paint samples. No complaining here! I wanted a clean crisp white. Not too warm since my cabinets were already a bright white. I’m not sure what paint was used on the cabinets since they were painted before I moved it. White paint is not just white paint anymore. I looked through tons of paint samples and settled on Benjamin Moore Simply White (middle row, far left sample). My kitchen has previously been painted Benjamin Moore Shaker Beige. It has only one…
Read MoreSo we came home less than two months ago to a flooded and moldy basement. So far we have had Serv Pro come in and clean up the water, dry the basement out and handle to disposal of all our moldy and wet items. Basically everything that was down there. This is what the basement looks like today. You are first met with a zippered doorway. Very sci fi movie feeling. It does keep the kids and dog out and the bad mold spores away from the upstairs. You have to unzip it and carefully step through… Everything has been removed. Some items that we are hoping to save are being stored in our garage for now. My beautiful built-in is gone but it will be back… The sheetrock was removed halfway up the wall. I was told yesterday by my contractor that he would have to remove the whole…
Read MoreI’m going to warn you ahead of time. These are not the prettiest pictures. I’ll start you off with something pretty to balance out all the ugly. First up is a bucket of crayons. Who doesn’t love a bucket of fresh and unused crayons? Next up, a sign in a restaurant that I thought would be fun somewhere… Last but not least is a mirror I saw at HomeGoods. I picked it up for my boys’ shared room but then the DIYer in me put it back down. I’ll keep the picture for future reference… And now on to the ugly, holes in your wall. When I took all my cabinets down I was left with some holes. Some were deeper than others so I picked up a patching kit at the hardware store, complete with spackling paste, a self-adhesive patch, sand paper and a putty knife. The spackling paste…

Read MoreMy one man cleaning crew is retiring since he starts kindergarten on Monday. Whimper. My youngest is like my little sidekick and has been with me every day as I work around our house and then blog about it. My other two will lend a hand as well but since I do most of my work when they are in school the job falls on my youngest. He loves to help. He is my clean up crew, and the one who double checks if I’ve screwed something in tight enough. He measures, sometimes paints, and accompanies me to Home Depot to cut wood. He is always ready to try out a chair or two and has made many, many long trips to IKEA. He likes the meatballs. I went back through my blog to find all the times he lent a hand… I keep reminding him of all these little…
Read MoreA couple weeks ago I removed the cabinets from one section of my kitchen. It was used only for office type storage, not kitchen storage at all. It was becoming a dumping ground so I wanted to try to use this space better. Brighter, whiter and more open was the look I was going for. I started by removing the cabinets which then left me with this nice hole in my flooring. When I removed the base cabinet I got all the way down to the floor boards. I wasn’t sure what I would find and this was the worse case scenario. I had an easy solution though. First I had the cleaning crew come through and clean up. Once it was all vacuumed up I could actually see three different layers of vinyl flooring. The previous homeowners had done cosmetic finishes on the kitchen which included vinyl tile flooring.…
